Kolibri Inhalation Performance

Aptar Pharma’s Non-Propellant Liquid Inhaler (NPLI) platform provides targeted drug delivery to specific areas of the lungs. The breath triggered inhalation control technology ensures doses are administered with ease and only when the user is inhaling. The aerosol generator system can be tailored for optimized performance when delivering specific drug molecules. The sleek, cylindrical design with an integrated mouthpiece, houses specialized digital technology that automatically uploads device data to the cloud for review and analysis.

Kolibri also provides both haptic and digital inhalation feedback, that helps to eliminate user error. All of these innovative features combine to produce a simple, reliable and portable nebulizer system that can deliver a variety of liquid drug formulations to targeted regions of the patient’s lungs.

e-Health Inhalation Technology

The Kolibri nebulizer system offers features that deliver data driven performance like nothing before. The smart system automatically stores digital therapy data via a data exchange for that is encoded safety and security. This stored data is useful for patient adherence monitoring and can even help determine the quality of the inhalation activity achieved by the user.
Kolibri generates and saves data regarding:

  • Inhalation technique
  • Inspiratory flow
  • Inhaled volume
  • Administration status
  • Time/date
  • Device status/battery power
  • Aerosol generator life-meter

This detailed nebulizer inhalation data can also be used to support reliable clinical study results for products under development. It can also help physicians or researchers to optimize patient therapy regimens that improve patient outcomes. With Aptar Pharma’s Kolibri vibrating mesh nebulizer, patients can now receive accurate use and compliance feedback without invasive in-person assessments. Longer term monitoring via Kolibri’s data collection functions can provide Health Care Professionals (HCPs) with the insights needed to provide patients with timely interventions for improved health.

Kolibri Nebulizer Connect App

The Kolibri Connect App can be loaded onto most smartphones and provide users with a single interface for digital nebulizer data. From therapy reminders to dosing planning, the Connect App helps HCPs and patients stay on the prescribed treatment regimen. The app also provides the user with a personal therapy diary with access to the entire therapy plan history.

In addition to maintaining use data, the Kolibri Connect App also conveniently shares inhalation technique feedback with the user in real-time for optimal drug deposition. The connectivity features of Kolibri also allow centralized therapy control and the integration of additional medications and compatible digital devices into one system.

Customizable and Patient Centric

The Kolibri mesh nebulizer system provides flexible performance and unique customization options. Because it is based on a programmable digital control system, the Kolibri can be customized for user-specific medication, patient group and market strategies. Aerosol head tuning is possible to optimize Kolibri’s output for each individual drug formulation. The user can visually view real time feedback on the connect app regarding inhalation flow, so that they know if their inhalation is within required specifications to deliver the drug product to dose. If the inhalation flow is out of range, the user will receive a color-coded notice.

Aptar Pharma’s Kolibri vibrating mesh nebulizer also provides direct haptic feedback through the system. The system vibrates distinctively to signal when the user’s inspiration is either too high or within the specified range. This enables the Kolibri nebulizer to respond to the individual patient’s inspiration and inhalation capabilities and let them know if their inhalation maneuver is going to provide optimal drug delivery. Available in three different colors, the Kolibri system provides pharmaceutical companies with brand differentiation opportunities.

Intelligent Administration System (iNAS)

Our Intelligent Administration System (iNAS) delivers optimized drug deposition inspiratory flow control. The fully automated system releases the aerosol in the most therapeutically useful phase of inspiration. The integrated feedback loop, available through the Kolibri Connect app, provides the user with direct feedback regarding their specific inhalation technique, and inhaled volume of drug mist. This is form of real-time training for users on achieving optimal inhalation, while avoiding techniques that can compromise drug delivery.

The electronic data sharing features also provide physicians and clinical study centers with additional insight into the compliance with the therapy program. They can use the data to modify the course of ongoing treatment and can more easily interpret complex study results as they happen.

Key & Lock System for Product and Patient

Kolibri’s proprietary Key & Lock System provides product and patient protection. The Key & Lock System limits the nebulizer to only use approved aerosol head combinations that have demonstrated the ability to support robust drug delivery.

This avoids potential risk of over or underdosing that could result from the use of unauthorized or non-genuine aerosol heads. The same digital tracking systems can also measure the remaining useful life of the aerosol fill head, which can become blocked over extended use. This enables the user to replace the consumed component so that the unit continues to provide optimal drug delivery performance. The Kolibri nebulizer’s Lock & Key System also prevents the use of unauthorized generic products.

Clinical Applications

Aptar Pharma’s Kolibri vibrating mesh nebulizer systems include the CONNECT-WEB-INTERFACE features that can be used to support clinical study design. It provides a digital centralized interface that can be used to keep up with adherence monitoring from virtually anywhere with an internet connection. In addition, the Kolibri’s digital technology provides individual user inhalation quality data as well as lung performance trend information including:

  • Peak expiratory flow (PEF)
  • Forced expiratory volume (FEV1)
  • Forced vital capacity (FVC)

This data can help the clinical study professionals to evaluate the patient’s lung function, particularly those suffering from respiratory conditions like Asthma or Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). Kolibri’s advanced connect-web-interface helps clinical researchers with patient management responsibilities and minimizes the impact of variables on the clinical study results. By automatically selecting relevant parameters, such as flow rate of inhalation, or patient inspiration times, scientists can quickly evaluate each individual study participants data. In the end, analysis of this data can help determine if the patient’s inhalation technique was the cause of unfavorable study results or not. The digital features of Kolibri provide unique opportunities to integrate some third-party devices onto a single data platform.
